BLOW

*** out of 5

Friday 03.30.2001, Loew's on 2nd Avenue and 11th Street

You get the gist of this movie from the trailers: good-looking people using drugs and killing people in a glamorous world with a groovy soundtrack.

Well, this movie isn't exactly Goodfellas, but it isn't so different either. Hey, Ray Liotta is in both of them.

But I don't use that comparison in a bad way; I really enjoyed Goodfellas. Just don't expect this movie to be something it is not.

Johnny Depp is so handsome, that it is easy for you to feel a little sympathy for his character. Besides, in this movie, he is really great guy, he just deals drugs for a living. Okay, I'll suspend my disbelief, and buy that most drug dealers are really good people... but WAIT A SECOND this is supposed to be based on a true story!

Oh well. Maybe George Jung is a somewhat good person. Who knows? Although, ask anyone who has dealt with drugs dealers, and I'm sure they'll tell you what WONDERFUL, decent Johnny Depp lookalikes that they all are. (but I guess that is what the movies are for sometimes, I am digressing...)

But that aside, what I liked about this movie is that the actors could actually act and that the dialog kept me tuned in. The supporting performances were all very impressive. The clothing and styling of it were very easy on the eyes. The story line kept me curious and entertained.

What I didn't like: very one-dimensional women, most of the men were decent, fun-loving, let's-smoke-a-little-pot type drug users/dealers, while the women were disloyal, money-grubbing, snort-a-little-coke-while-they-were-pregnant types that were always screaming. In this movie, even Pablo Escoban comes across as an honorable man.

Overall, I think that Johnny Depp really puts in an excellent performance, as does Ray Liotta. Paul Reubens is wonderful and even little Miss Roberts does a good job. Definitely worth my ten bucks.
